People, particularly women, tend to have a complicated relationship with body hair. Most women love lush, long hair on top of their head, but the hair on their armpits, face, arms, legs, and in private areas? Not so much!

While there’s nothing wrong with body hair, there’s no denying that a hairless body does feel amazing.  If you want to get rid of your unwanted body hair, you have a lot of options. Here are the most common ways to remove unwanted body hair without going to a body salon.

Waxing is a hair removal process that involves the use of sticky wax or wax strips to effectively remove hair from the roots. With this method, you simply adhere the waxing material to the body hair and quickly tug it to pull out body hairs from the follicle.

Due to the tugging action, waxing tends to be uncomfortable. But you should get used to it over time.

In general, you have two options for at-home and beginner-friendly waxing:

Melted wax is a thick liquid that you apply to the body using a stick. In general, you need to let it dry for a few minutes before you can pull it out.

Think of wax strips as regular tapes but they’re stickier to pull body hair. Most wax strips need to be heated or warmed before use.

If waxing will be your to-go removal method, then you also need to invest in waxing accessories. For instance, if you use wax that needs to be warmed, you need an electric wax warmer that evenly heats the wax and allows better temperature control.

For a virtually painless and fast way to remove body hair, shaving takes the top spot. With this hair removal method, you use a razor or shaver with sharp blades.

Unlike waxing though, shaving doesn’t remove hair right from the roots. Instead, the blade cuts down the hair to the level of the skin. Thus, the results aren’t exactly long-lasting and permanent.

Hair can re-grow after three days, and they do so with vengeance. In general, shaving causes thicker, darker hair growth. It may also cause irritation and razor burns if you use a dull blade.

That said, shaving allows for quick removal of body hair. Plus, it works on different body parts including your face, bikini area, arms, legs, and armpits.

If you have the time and patience, tweezing is said to be among the most effective techniques to remove unwanted hair from the body. It removes hair the same as waxing – by pulling hairs from the roots. Yet instead of a one-time tugging of body hair, tweezing means you need to pluck individual hairs from the roots. This makes it a time-consuming process.

Due to tweezing and removing hair from the roots, the result also lasts longer than shaving. Tweezing works on any body hair, but it can be problematic for hard-to-reach areas such as armpits and private areas.

Like waxing, tweezing can cause discomfort. You can apply ice to reduce inflammation and pain after a tweezing session.

Epilation combines the best of both tweezing and electronic shaving. Like tweezing, it removes body hair from the roots. But instead of doing this manually, you use an electronic device (like with a shaver) called an epilator to pluck away the hairs.

With a high-quality epilator, you can ensure proper removal of hair from the roots and give you a hairless body for weeks. What’s more is that epilation results in hair growing back finer and softer, making it less noticeable.

In general, epilators are often used to remove hair from armpits, legs, and other larger areas of the body. Nonetheless, you can find smaller epilators that can be used to eliminate hair even in your private area.

Since it pulls the hair from the roots, the process can be painful. But going slow and stretching the skin can help reduce the discomfort.

Depilatories are another painless way to remove unwanted body hair. Unlike shaving though, it gives you longer-lasting results. Depilatories are often found as creams, but you can also find them as lotions or gel products.

These creams consist of chemicals such as titanium dioxide, sodium, and thioglycolic acid, that weaken hair strands by breaking down hair proteins. When applied to your body, depilatory creams essentially ‘dissolve’ the hair just below the skin surface. As a result, you can easily remove hair by wiping or washing it away.

These chemical ingredients are usually safe, however, there’s still a risk of reaction, especially for those with sensitive skin. So, before using a depilatory cream, make sure to do a patch test first. If there’s no reaction after 24 hours, then you can apply the cream over larger sections of the body.

Take note that some depilatories may also contain ingredients to help smoothen and exfoliate the skin’s epidermis.

Body hair can be annoying for most people. If you’re annoyed or bothered by the hair that grows on your body, apart from your head, you have several options available to you. Depending on the method you choose from the list above, you can easily stay body hair-free for days or even weeks.
